What IS a Community School?

NYC defines Community Schools as an equity strategy to organize resources and share leadership so that academics, health, youth development, and family engagement are integrated into the fabric of schools. There are four features of the NYC Community Schools (OPEN EXTERNAL LINK)  initiative:
  1. Collaborative Leadership and Practice
  2. Family and Community Empowerment
  3. Expanded Learning Time
  4. Wellness and Integrated Student Supports
  5.

Collaborative Leadership and Practice

Collaborative Leadership and Practice

The Community School Director, Ms. Butler, works closely with Principal Lucius and Assistant Principals Foy and Jones to make data-driven decisions to serve the P.S. 241 community.

Ms. Butler can be reached at jbutler15@schools.nyc.gov; (718) 636-4725 ext. 3590, Room 359.

Family and Community Empowerment

Family and Community Empowerment

The Community Schools program brings in and connects families with services that meet the needs of parents and guardians while engaging the larger community. Families are empowered through sharing their feedback via assessments and participation in the Community Schools Advisory Team.

Expanded Learning Time

Expanded Learning Time

We create opportunities for students to learn before school, after school, and during the summer. Currently, the Community Schools program funds our after-school violin program.

Wellness and Integrated Student Supports

Wellness and Integrated Student Supports

We bring programs and services to support physical, mental and emotional health.  Most recently, we have partnered with Helen Keller International to provide vision screening and Warby Parker to provide glasses to students who need them. Just before the holidays, we were also the recipients of dozens of brand new winter coats, thanks to New York Cares.

Attendance Matters

When the four features of the NYC Community Schools program are successfully implemented, students should be increasingly excited and committed to being in school every day and on time and, families will have the support needed to help reach this goal.
